Okay, let’s be real—I’ve only just 12 hours in and I’m already way too invested. Like, emotionally attached to game. Between the painterly art style, mysterious characters, and that weird, dreamy melancholy that’s baked into every frame, Expedition 33 looks like it was made for people like me, people who care about how a game feels as much as how it plays.
The first thing that hit me was the worlds liveliness. Even in the introductory scene of the game, it visually made my eyes lively and made me think I was playing something bad. The world really continues to live outside of us, while wandering around the map, I stopped and was mesmerized for minutes just because of the crowd or the riot of colors in one place. The next most striking thing is the music of the game. OH MY GOD I HAVE NOT SEEN SUCH IMPRESSIVE MUSIC IN A LONG TIME. The interesting thing is that the producer found the guy who made the music on the forums and offered it. We would not have heard of such a successful person. Sometimes the game looks so beautiful that you just want to stop, listen to the music and look at the screen. I can't remember the last time I experienced something like this. (Maybe Ghost of Tsushima most recently)
The premise is wild too: a cursed number that brings doom, and a group setting off to stop the inevitable. There’s this mix of quiet sadness and stubborn hope that reminds me of Shadow of the Colossus, or NieR: Automata. You can tell it’s going to be emotional—one of those games that makes you feel heavy in the best way.
I think this game has the best turn based combat EVER and its not even close. You don't just wait and give the option, the parry system is very important and it made this game so enjoyable, it is very hard to predict what the enemies will do and there are also meme enemies and thanks to this, there were moments after a boss fight where I said "what da hell is goin on". I can't wait to play more.
